Well Smaltimorians, if you ask me, this is a summer for belly dancin'

If you feel tempted, this summer's classes I've been prepping for are going to be awesome.

My new class sessions Start the First week of July 2008 at the Harbor East MAC. Get all the details here:
http://www.shemsdance.com/classes/classes.htm#classes then email me to reserve your spot, the come and dance!

So I've been prepping for the belly dance classes I'll be teaching this summer and they are going to be awesome!

In Belly dance Essentials we'll be working on finger cymbals (aka zills or sagat). We'll learn how to play some rhythms and basic patterns. we'll learn different tones you can make. We'll learn when to play and when not to play. We'll learn how to accent our playing and how to highlight our dancing. And we'll put in a lot of practice dancing and zilling at the same time. It will be hardcore sagat action.

In Technique and Musicality we will explore the Egyptian Oriental Entrance Piece. This is the most complex and nuanced piece in a dancer's routine. It is the first impression and the moment the dancer has to show she really knows her stuff. We will learn about the origins of this dance and the feeling connected with it. We will build and sharpen our technique and learn to utilize our muscles for polish and refinement. We will explore the music for deep understanding and we will dance like queens! The queens of raqs sharqi!

In Fundamentals of Performance Quality movement we will explore creating dances. We will analyze music, discuss how to connect with musical phrasing, delve into instrument driven movement, discuss staging, delve into building dance choreography and discuss tools for good improvisation. We will spend time with transitions between movement.

In Belly Dance Basics we will be building correct technique from the get-go. Isolations, footwork, technique building, arms, we will continue to work on these things and build in an ongoing manner. If you are just starting or still want to build your basic technique. This class will take it's time to breakdown, refine, discuss muscles to use and finding movement.

Sunrise belly dance will be moving to a new time in the wee hours of Friday morning. 6 am - This class is continual belly dance movement - we start with a nice warm up drill medium paced rhythmic steps, build into shimmy drills, slow down into undulating movements and then a little stretch at the end. I love this class because an hour of straight dance in the morning is a wonderful way to start the day. As a bonus, immediately following this class is Theresa Lummino's warm yoga flow class. Which I've taken and really enjoy (part of why I'm moving the class, so I can have that hour of belly dance followed by and hour of yoga, sweet.)

I might have to cut back on how many classes I can teach next fall due to school obligations, so help me make this summer rock in serious belly dance fashion. If you are interested, I've been dying to put together a hafla of awesome porportions - live Arabic band, both performance and open dancing, the best guest performers and you!

And if you are wondering "who the heck is this Shems person and why should I take from her?" Well, prepare yourself, I'm about to do some tooting of my own horn:

I've been studying this dance obsessively for the last 12 years, supplementing my dance education with modern, ballet, jazz, body conditioning for dancers, many, many folkloric forms, Middle Eastern history, Arabic, music lessons and more. I have studied and continue to study with many of the biggest stars of Oriental dance, American, Canadian, Turkish, Lebanese and Egyptian, the list is too long to fit here, but I post it on my website. This summer I'm off to study with Dina, Randa, Dandash and Mo Gedawi of Egypt and I've already attended the Turkish Folk Tours dance camp and taken several classes with Orit Maftsir of Israel.

I have worked professionally as a full time dancer in the past and I've been in very high demand at some of the most exclusive venues in DC. I'm respected by my peers in dance and loved by many of the venue owners and the Arabic community in DC and I'm growing in reputation in Baltimore. I've also been gaining a national reputation in the belly dance community and I've been asked to teach workshops back in Utah, North Carolina and now California, as well as here in our area in Virginia and Maryland and I've been asked to dance in selective shows in several different states across the country. I've won the hearts of several of the musicians I've worked with and could give you positive references from some pretty impressive names in our Middle Eastern music and dance community. I've won 2 awards at the 3 contests I've attended in the course of my dance career. One with my former troupe, performing my choreography and that of my troupe mate Sumra (they went on the next year without me to win again also utilizing another choreography of mine) and one as a soloist in the professional category at the East Coast classic.

I'm not just your run of the mill Belly Dance instructor who took a few years of classes from a local teacher, then decided to hang up her shingle. I know my stuff in a major way and I always continue to train. When I teach I also provide supplemental information on my website so that my students can be informed and intellectual in their understanding of the very rich dance form that this is.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing all the other belly dance teachers in Baltimore, there are a few in the area I really respect for the wonderful and unique things they have to offer as well. Different people have their different strengths. I just know what I have to offer is unique and valuable.

I'm dying to find those of you who are dying to take your dancing to the next level, who want to dig deeper, go further, become above the caliber of the average professional belly dancer in our community, who want to honor this art form by really doing it extra well and have a great time in the process. Oh yes, serious dancers. I want you. I even want the not so serious dancers who do it for fun or fitness. If you can have fun, get exercise and become a great dancer in the process, why not? It's a win, win, win situation.

And those of you who think it would be cool to learn to belly dance, but have been sitting on the fence. It's time to jump in. Belly dance isn't just a few new moves to do at the club or for your husband (or wife as the case may be). It's a wonderful social community, where women bond with and enjoy the company of other women. (The occasional brave man is embraced as well!) It is a door to some of the most incredible music and cultural experiences. It is an opportunity to tap into and release deep emotions. It is an opportunity to be more glamorous then you ever thought you would have a reason to be. It is a fountain of youth, whose gentle athleticism keeps you young in heart and younger looking, because of the joy of it. It is exercise that doesn't feel like exercise. It is an opportunity to appreciate the sexiness of your own body whatever shape you are. It is so worthwhile in a hundred ways.

Come play with me this summer. Let's Belly Dance!

Baltimore International Rhythm & Drumming Society is looking for some amazing people---Are you one of them???

Greetings!

I am Daveed Korup, Executive Director for BIRDS (Baltimore International Rhythm & Drumming Society) and I am announcing an open call for some amazingly inventive and "out of the box" creative individuals who might be interested in making a difference. For those who have never experienced a BIRDS Festival, I invite yo to visit our website at: www.drumtogether.org. There are some fantastic pictures posted on-line for this pawst year's event. These pictures are from the two evening concerts and have been provided by Eric Willison, President of the Mill Valley Cultural Arts Umbrella (www.millvalleyarts.org); click on the BIRDS link under the Latest News banner. We will be posting many of these on the BIRDS’ site shortly. If anyone took pictures during the Saturday street fair, we are looking for new photos for the website. You will receive proper photo credit and a link to your web page, should you have one and wish a link.

On to other matters, John Millen, our current Board President, has informed me that he wishes to step down, after many years of dedicated service to the festival. I congratulate John on his extensive commitment and dedication to the community. He has expressed his desire to continue serving on the board in a sort of emeritus capacity. Institutional memory is vital to the success of any organization.

So where does this leave BIRDS? Well, to put on a festival that can reach a maximum potential public requires people who can work together to create the event. We need people who have fundraising & grant writing experience. Additionally, we need people who have skills in promotion & marketing…audio, photo & video production… programming & logistics... community education, etc. We are looking for imagination, innovation and creative problem solving.

This is a tall task!!! However, it cannot be done successfully by just a few people. This is especially true when taking into account that everyone has a life outside BIRDS: i.e. work, school, family and other obligations. BIRDS is a community-based organization that needs a strong community behind it.

Now, to next topic: the BIRDS’ Board. I am announcing that there are six to ten openings for new board members. We are looking for people who want to be community builders and who wish to influence the future direction of the Baltimore International Rhythm Festival. The board needs people who can do all those items I addressed above, plus bookkeeping and general office assistance.

There are no limits to the possibilities that can be accomplished if we work together. That said, it is important for everyone to realize that for BIRDS to move forward we need people to step up and take on these various tasks.

The beauty of this is that no one will be asked to do anything outside their expertise. If we can get enough folks to become involved, then no one will have to work too hard and much more will get accomplished. It is truly up to the community to decide the direction of the organization. It should never reflect just one point of view, but many.

Well, there you have it. I am challenging everyone to get involved. It’s now up to all of us to make this wonderful organization achieve its fullest potential.

The World is giant drum just waiting to be played…

Respects...
Daveed Korup

Baltimore Santas get press and hook up with London!!!!!

Thanks to all the DC and Baltimore Santas who showed up yesterday and weren't scared off by the weather (that didn't actually happen). Baltimore Santarchy article and pics in Baltimore Sun here:
www.baltimoresun.com/news/lo...35.story

****Any Baltimore santas who have pics to share please email me at goddesscomedia@yahoo.com. We can get links to flickr, etc, posted to the website.

You can't tell from the photos, but we had about 20 folks....a few came and went or arrived late, but it was a great time!

During the event we had a cell phone hook up with the London Santarchy!
Of course they were 5 hours ahead and already drunk, but we got to do a "Baltimore Ho ho ho / hello" from the states and they did a big London Santa Shout back to us. They were also much louder as they have about 800 santas!

So...you punks who didn't make it out...........get your Santa asses in gear for next year!!! LOL

Santas me smile.

Love and Laughter,
Goddesscomedia

I am a photographer with 2 yrs experience who\'s a creative background is
in graphic design for almost 10 yrs.

I\'m looking to do Female body building poses, and feats of strength* lifting a tv, tearing a phone book etc* But you will be wearing stereotypical 50\'s female clothes to contrast the Amazon like effect of being strong modern woman with submissive ideas visually of the 50\'s. Solo photos. I consider this an adult gig because it\'s fetish themed but the idea of nudity or anything visually erotic as in nudity is at most implied nudity.
I\'m looking for open ladys who are looking to have fun, be safe and just show off their form and strength in way that it rarely gets seen.

Pay is in travel expenses and food,. you get a Cd of all the photos taken and 10 images that you choose will be \"fixed\" to the level they can be used for magazine print.
Car accident - can you help us identify this truck?

Hello everyone!

On Thursday September 13th at 10 a.m., I was a passenger in a car that was run off the road and totalled while travelling on westbound Rt. 70 (both occupants are fine!). The driver directly behind us was too busy keeping an eye on us and didn't get a license plate number on the cement mixer truck that suddenly changed lanes while we were passing him in the fast lane, forcing us off the road. The truck driver did not stop.

My friend is hoping she can figure out the company to which the truck belongs, as they may have manifests for the trucks that show their routes for the day. Unfortunately we did not get a company name. We do know it was a newer truck, and very clean. The body was painted red and white, with stripes or swirls on the mixer. The mixer was shaped so that the back/top end tapered a lot; it's possible the model is one that empties from the front instead of the back.

If you think you may have ANY idea what company this truck belonged to (or if may have seen the accident) please contact me through my tribe profile. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

On a good note, we both climbed out of the car OK, were rescued by my SO, had the car towed, borrowed my parent's car and were back on the road by 3pm in the afternoon (for an 8 hour trip).

Thanks a bunch, and drive defensively!
Amy

I'm looking for a good seamstress to do some sewing for me. She or he has to be at least as good as me, preferably better, and feel comfortable working with delicate fabrics, like silk satins and chiffons. Also I'd like them to be okay with working without patterns (capable of making their own patterns) and good at fitting.

If you know of this person, please send me their contact info.

ISO 2 African-American Models for a painting project

I need

-a mature African-American woman, preferably one who can look beleivably old enough to have a young adult son. Also one that is capable of directed expression.

-a young Adult (or older teenager, if the mother is my other model and can supervise) African-American man.

If you can be one character and know somebody that would be appropriate for the other, please recruit them.

I will use the models to take reference photos for a narrative painting I'm working on. You will be clothed, I might ask the young man to have an open shirt.

I'm offering $25 per model for an hour of your time (I'd offer more, but I'm just a student right now).

I've also posted this on craigslist, if you know anybody that might be good for the project, please send them my way.
recommendation for a therapist?

Dear Baltimoreans

Howsabout a recommendation for a therapist?

Prefer female
psychologist or msw
talking cure type,
as opposed to comically
big syringe of -zac type

Prefer moderately prices/accepts insurance.

Trauma/various f-d up stuff that happens to you
when you are a kid and inevitably bleeds into your
adult life specialist would also be a plus.

Prefer hampden/inner harbor area or near there.

Would prefer recs off list and based on
experience rather than word of mouth.

thanks
in advance

I want to buy some bandanas, you know, maybe adidas or puma label, or with flaming skulls or just something cool. I decided since my hair gets wacky when I work out, it will be nice to tie it back, but where does one go bandana shopping in Baltimore?

Celebrate First Fridays in Hampden this month with Local musicians such as Sahffi and the Moving Sound at Charlotte Elliott. Friday, July 6th, 5 - 9 p.m. Hampden will celebrate summer with live music and entertainment, refreshments and lots of great late shopping.

Sahffi is an all original artist based out of Baltimore . Her style is a spontaneous blend of rock, jazz, folk, and blues, stemming from her early love of classical music.

A graduate of Peabody Conservatory of Music, Sahffi has been a music therapist, music teacher and lead vocalist for cover bands. However, through her entire musical career Sahffi had a driving need to write intensely inspired songs and lyrics. She finally gave in and became a solo artist in 2001.

Her performances have been praised as “inspiring”, “magical” and “bewitching”. Paul Iwancio, President of the Baltimore Songwriters Association said, “Sahffi is a talented, melodious trapeze artist. Her powerful voice propels her across the stage… we in the audience are mesmerized by (her) wonder.”

More information on Sahffi and the Moving Sound can be found at www.sahffi.com

Charlotte Elliott is an independent and women owned business in Baltimore ’s popular shopping district of Hampden. For June she had The Meridian Belly Dance Troupe and for July will host Sahffi and the Moving Sound.

Charlotte Elliott has a grand selection of antiques and vintage clothing, great furniture and delightful home decorations. Charlotte Hays Murray, owner of Charlotte Elliott, has been awarded Hampden’s covetted title, Merchant of the Year, 2007 and continues to strive to bring only the best to the thriving neighborhood of Hampden, Baltimore .
Intro to Improv Tribal Bellydance Class with Brooke

INTRO TO IMPROV TRIBAL BELLY DANCE at
The Promenade Dance Sport Facility
Sunday April 8 - June 2nd, 1-2pm

The class will be geared towards people who have had at least one session
of belly dance in the past (experience with basic moves like shimmies,
body rolls, snake arms, etc.), though I can also offer "prep sessions" at
my house for those interested who need to learn the basics.

Improv Tribal Belly Dance is a series of moves that are woven together
through hand and verbal cues. In this sense, it becomes a universal dance
form wherein anyone who learns the moves and their cues can dance together
in an improvisational lead and follow fashion. It's a very liberating,
proud and joyful dance form that celebrates women in all of their shapes,
sizes, colors and emphasizes spontaneity, interaction and a fusion of both
individual and group dynamics.

The class will focus on American Tribal Style moves as well as other
fusion and tribal choreographies that draw from various forms of dance,
including Cabaret, African, Indian, Middle Eastern and Greek.

Each class will include a movement-focused warm up, drills/new elements
portion and a free dance period in which the improv movements are
solidified in a lead/follow to music. My goal is that everyone will know
and feel confident in dancing with basic moves in an improv tribal belly
dance format by the end of this class.

Class size will be limited to 15 students to ensure personal attention.
Students are encouraged to sign up for the 8 week session in advance to
ensure a space in the class.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please come in form fitting clothes that ensure easy
movement and comfort. NO COIN SCARVES OR DISTRACTING ACCESSORIES ALLOWED.
Please be kind and respect the right of your fellow students to learn in
non-distracting environment. Shawls and hip wraps are fine, as long as I
can still easily see your muscles/hip movements.

Class Rate: $12/drop-in rate or $80/8 week session in advance.

If you have any questions at all about the class structure or need any
more information, or want to pre-register via Paypal, feel free to email
me brooke AT kallistitribal DOT com or send me a message through tribe.

This is just a reminder that First Friday in Hampden is this Friday, February 2. Mark your calendars, tell your friends. Hampden shopping after dark. I will be at my shop until 8 or 9pm and I will have wine and cheese and live music so swing by to check it all out. I have tons of new vintage clothes and all sorts of great stuff. Lots of other shops on the Avenue will be open late as well with their own events so you can make an evening of it.
That is First Friday, February 2nd, 5pm to 9pm. Because everyone needs more time to shop.
Hampden is located in Baltimore on W. 36th St. between Keswick Ave. and Falls Rd. (mostly)

sexist santas in bmore - what? Email campaign!!!

OK.....So I was going to picket the sexist Santas in Baltimore (www.santacrawl.com) this year but I have to work. Oh well!....BUT SOMEDAY!!! mmwwwahahahaha

I had accepted that the "other" Santas were just lame and I'd have more fun at Santarchy anyway - BUT they interviewed one of the organizers of www.santacrawl.com on 98 Rock here in Baltimore yesterday morning and I almost threw up. The 'morning personalities' were just as idiotic as the santa guy. Even the female DJ - total neanderthall ideas about women and men! "Oh women don't like it anyway - and if they show up, we haze them till they leave". "The Ladies get their shopping day on black Friday, so we get the bar crawl." They also said that women couldn't last as long as they do, would get tired and whine, etc. The DJ's just agreed and added to the stereotype.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!! That kind of thing makes me ill!
I do not live to shop and I NEVER shop on black Friday - hate the crowds and don't have the patience for standing in line. Not to mention my low patience for idiots and my poverty. LOL

So I just had to send off a harsh but funny email to the radio station and the santacrawl dudes.

I just have to find a way to get out of our annual event at work next year so I can show up to that santa crawl. I'd love to see a contigent of both male and female cacophonist/burner santas invade that event with picket signs - "Say NO to sexist santas!" and such. We could do funny cheers and follow them around - and if they copped attitude, just laugh and then kiss all over eachother or even them!

Ahhh.....but I dream

Well it would be cool if I wasn't the only one to send emails to 98 rock and the baltimore santa dudes.

Can't wait for DC Santarchy! THE REAL SANTA EVENT! www.santarchydc.com
HO HO HO

They have an email contact on their website. contact@santacrawl.com
email them and tell them how much they suck and un-santa they are!
MEN - email them and tell them how you were going to go, but then found out there's no women allowed.
Tell them you are boycotting them for the DC event cause the ladies will be there!
Email 98 ROCK and tell them the REAL SANTAS are at SANTARCHY and Sexist Santas suck!

Love and Laughter,
Trouble-making-SantaGoddess

Anyone interested in philosophy?

I am trying to organize a philo-cafe and can do it at the Village Learning Place on Charles St. We would meet twce a month for an open discussion and you can come when you want, but I would like to get about 6-10 regulars. I've been doing these for the past ten years and they are really fun. Please contact me if you are interested.

What is a philosophy cafe? It is an open discussion in a public forum about an important and interesting topic. Some examples of past topics include: taking things philosophically, living the good life, what does it mean to contribute to society? what is the role of sincerity in today's society, and many more. Everyone who comes is encouraged to participate, formal training in philosophy is not required, and there is no fee involved. A different question is selected as the topic for each session; join our email list and you will receive the question of inquiry in advance. In short, a philosophy cafe is a place for having a good quality discussion.

"Seeds of Trouble" Bellydance show at Ascension

It's a goth club, so you know that means friendly people, great music, and lots of beautiful sharp-dressed people (and hot chicks in corsets, natch).

It's bellydancing, so you know that means exciting improv, death-defying stunts, and more shimmying than you can shake a stick at.

Plus, it's your first chance to see an up-and-coming new dancer on the dc/Charm City scene!

Come on, you know you want to go. For details, try www.marylandascension.com

Do any of y'all know anybody that plays instruments from the Middle East? Or where one might go to find such folks? What kind of Middle Eastern community is there here in Baltimore?

I am admittedly a recent move to Baltimore and I'm trying to get my self acclimated and educated on local culture. As part of my self-taught course, I've been getting movies and tv shows via netfix that are either Baltimore based or Baltimore centered. So far I've got Hairspray and Wired on the way. I was wondering what other shows y'all might suggest to add to my list.

I'm also open to other educational suggestions, must see sites I should visit, local artists I should familiarise myself with, etc.

Thanks,
Anyone know the artist/info on that sculpture on pratt st between hanover and hopkins? The big stainless looking one that you can spin by hand, blinding the morning car-muters and impressing the junkies? Writing a piece about "home" and somehow it fits in the story...
2 Goats Meet on a Bridge was the work of Gavin Heck, Fluid Movement, and Keytech Engineering, and describes the parable of two goats who meet on a narrow bridge and neither gives way so they fight, lock horns, fall into the water, and die miserable goat deaths. ....they won the Golden Flipper for most interesting water entry for their choreographed dance at the Canton water entry during which a team of white ninjas battled a team of black ninjas and the entire team of milkmaids died in crossfire. Fortunately they were resurrected by magic dust. You can read more at www.2goats.com.

I'm a High Weirdness guy from Atlanta just moving to Baltimore -- my family roots are here -- my grandfather ran a famous saloon at Chester & Low which Eubie Blake wrote a tribute to called, appropriately enough, "Corneo of Chestnut & Low (in Baltimo)". My dad was born here. I'm interested in high weirdness contacts, and especially in getting my two resident sons, 16 & 14, Karl & Randall, plugged into the local skater community.

Hey
My poem,
REPLACE AS BEFORE (The Faultless Rat Trap) Gavin Heck 10/25/2005
Is being published in the following!
Buy it, and I'll sign it next time i seez ya iffya like.

Love
Live

Gavin

BALTIMORE - Baltimore-based imprint Eight-Stone Press (ESP) proudly
Announces the release of the rat-inspired Infestation!
(http://eightstonepress.com/hon/hon7.75rats.htm), a sometimes unsavory
collection of tales of Charm City's unsung vermin.

For Infestation! - the second-ever “theme” issue of ESP's increasingly
Popular Smile, Hon, You're in Baltimore! series - ESP Editor William P. Tandy compiled the stories, poetry, photography and other artwork of 18 regional contributors, each inspired by their own encounters with Rattus norvegicus.

Since 2001, ESP has published the arguably Mobtown-centric Smile, Hon,
You're in Baltimore! as an outlet for Baltimore-related stories and images that might otherwise go unrecorded. The Johns Hopkins News-Letter called Smile, Hon “the literary equivalent of the Sizzler All-U-Can-Eat buffet . . . bountiful and bursting at the seams with delicious morsels.” In September 2004, Baltimore City Paper named Smile, Hon “Best Zine” in its annual “Best of Baltimore”
issue, calling it “surprisingly fascinating, consistently absurd, and often weird as hell . . . Baltimore at its bizarre best.” ESP subsequently published Smile,
Hon's first special issue, Giving Up the Ghost
(http://eightstonepress.com/hon/hon7.5ghost.htm), a collection of
otherwordly encounters from Baltimore and (the great) beyond, in October 2005.

Upcoming issues include Smile, Hon #8 (regular issue) and a special
scar-themed edition; submissions for both are being accepted through June 1, 2006.

Smile, Hon, You're in Baltimore! is an Eight-Stone Press production
(online at http://www.eightstonepress.com/hon) and is available locally for  purchase at Atomic Books (1100 W. 36th Street, Baltimore 21211;
http://www.atomicbooks.com)
and for loan as part of the Baltimore County Public Library's Zine
Collection
(http://www.bcpl.info/centers/library/zines.html).

4:00 pm – The Eros Army marches across the Ellipse towards the
White House for photo ops and “spreading some love”. Maybe we’ll pause
on the Ellipse for some shenanigans? It’s up to you!

4:30 / 5:00 pm – Serenade the White House. Cupids dance and
sing for cops maybe? Be silly, improvise street theatre, chant, or
express your political disgust if you like, but just don’t break the law or
piss off the secret service. Fellow cupids may end up assisting the
authorities in hand cuffing you should you decide to be an asshole.

5:00 / 5:30 pm – THE BOTTOM LINE SALOON - 1716 I St Nw
Time for food and beverages to quench
Cupid’s Thirst
Sing some naughty and anti-valentine
songs

6:30 / 7:00 pm - On our way to the next bar, Invade
VICTORIA'S SECRET (1050 Connecticut Ave NW) and ask: “ Is the reason
you don’t carry plus size lingerie because Victoria’s dirty secret is
that she has an eating disorder?” or just shout “Victoria is bigoted
against full figured women!” Don’t forget to give out some gifts! Good
location for giving out Condoms!

7:30 / 8:00 pm - The Bar Hop / Pub crawl truly begins!
First stop: LUCKY BAR!
1221 Connecticut Ave NW
Sing some naughty and anti-valentine
songs, drink, recruit strangers

*After Lucky’s –
Head towards Dupont Circle and maybe Adam’s Morgan to hit some
bars.

Suggested locations:
· Open to suggestions for visiting “naughty locations”
2:00
am – Bars close. Now go home and sleep it off, you sluts!

THE RULES
1. If asked, cupid is responsible for it all: cupid planned
it, we are all cupid, cupid loves you, cupid pleads the
fifth.....ect...... If asked again, and you can’t think of anything witty to say,
just say you are promoting safe sex and give them a condom. That oughta
shut ‘em up.

2. Wear an appropriate costume. Be creative. Make something if
you have to: some form of Cupid, Angel, Pan/faun/satyr, Venus, Fairies,
Horny toads......
Something to think about:
A.) Most likely It will be cold. Or it could be freakishly warm
like it has been lately. Be prepared for MD/DC/VA weather from Sybil:
i.e. be prepared and dress for anything.
B.) Remember that if you do wear a pair of wings, make sure they
are flexible as you don't want to put anyone's eye out as you go in
and out of bars, etc. Don’t have wings but want them? Shit, make ‘em out
of cardboard or paper and duck tape them to your back if you have
to!!!
C.) Wear comfy shoes – we are going to do a lot of walking and
cupid does not want to hear other cupids wine about sore feet.

3. Cupid brings stuff to GIFT. Give out valentines, candy, advice,
kisses, hugs, flowers,
toys, condoms, whatever. BRING SOMETHING!!!!!!

4. Cupid will BE NICE and CLEAN when kids are around during the day.
Weirding out adults and making people laugh is good – traumatizing
children is not! Please keep the daytime outside fun at a rated G/PG
level unless you are sure no families are in ear shot of you. However,
Rated R + material, practical jokes, and dirty dancing are encouraged for
adults and at night time. When the sun goes down.....the freaks come
out at night!

5. Cupid obeys the law and does not piss off the cops. Other cupids
will not bail you out of jail. CUPID WILL NOT DRINK AND DRIVE. Take
metro, get a hotel room, bribe a friend to be a designated driver – or
stick with cola and Shirley temples.

6. Cupid brings money for eating and drinking and pays his /her own
damn bar tab. If Santa can do it, so can Cupid.

7. Cupid may shoot people with harmless soft NERF arrows and squishy
things but cupid will not hurt anyone.

8. Keep your diapers on!!! Cupid will not strip naked unless in an
establishment that permits such states of undress.

9. Cupid will PARTICIPATE, be gregarious and have fun!

10. Cupid can't think of any more rules. If you can think of
anything, email cupid at cupidcacophony@yahoo.com

New cafe/shop in Baltimore: Fell's Point

Hi - I want to let you all know about a new Baltimore shop, bluehouse (and do some self promotion, as I am the manager).

1407 Fleet Street
Baltimore, MD 21231
www.bluehouselife.com (website coming soon)
1 1/2 blocks east of Whole Foods

From our promo literature:
We are a new home store in the Fells Point/Inner Harbor area, offering home furnishings, accessories, and decorating elements (such as flooring and paint) that meet our criteria for earth friendliness and healthy living.

Unique in Baltimore, we extend our brand into our in-house cafe, where our beverages are organic and Fair Trade and our food is as fresh and healthy as possible . . . all while remaining delicious, of course. We're carrying locally made baked goods, lunch items made for us by Zia's Cafe in Towson, and a selection of other snacks. Feel free to come in and linger; we've made sure to provide free wireless service.

We also feel a responsibility towards our employees, therefore we are paying a living wage, as well as offering health benefits.

Stop in and check us out!

-Amy

New tribe for Events for Baltimore / DC area

Since there was no tribe that delt specifically with these kinds of events, I started one. I know there are tribes for single specific events - but not one that was inclusive and would list them all.

So...for silly, fun, artisitc, political, charitable, pointless, inclusive events....come join this tribe. We can share event info, or plans stuff. Let's get Baltimore up and going!

Hello all!
I'm new to this tribe.

I was wondering if there is anyone here who is familiar with flash mobs and other similar events or interested in getting some stuff going.

This isn't a flash mob, per se, but I was thinking of going to DC for the Cupid Cacophony on Feb 11. The website address is http://www.geocities.com/cupidcacophony/home.html

Anyone else interested?
If I go, I'll probably drive to a metro station and take the train in.

HOLE foods market: a satirical commentary

Hi everyone

I thought this community was a bit dead, so I should stir up some discussion with some of my writings. In my student days, I used to write for a student/faculty newsletter. Most of my writings had this south-park, rag on everyone style, which was quite popular. I'll do the same here for everyone's entertainment/disgust:

HOLE FOODS

As I strolled through Whole Foods Market by Harbor East yesterday the ambiance triggered a lot in my mind.

What is this market trying to capitalize on? Who is the target audience?
I've been to this market in my student days in Berkeley, and have been wondering about this question ever since.

Several types of people came up to my mind:

As for what they try to capitalize on:

1) The idea that good bread, cheese, coffee, cereals, or healthy foods should be an expensive luxury item.
If you have really travelled around the world, in many countries they eat more unprocessed foods that taste so much better that are not necessarily expensive. Unfortunately, I get the impression that in the last decades in America mass production has meant the reduction in quality of foods, such as using corn syrup instead of cane sugar. I think the reduction in quality of basic food items is now creating a demand for something better, but at a pretty high cost.

2) The eco-conscious
These people want to save the pretty flowers in the rain forest, but are too lazy to read proper books about sustainable development. Purchasing cereals that look ecologically friendly with a smiling monkey (0.0001% will go to saving 0.0001% of the rain forests) satisfies their desires on behaving like a environmentally conscious citizen.

3) Those who don't understand good food, but want to separate themselves from the rest.
So what do you do if you make a 6 figure income, have no idea about good food, but want to look 'good' in front of your friends? This is the best place to go to. You can find exotic foods which you can display in your kitchen. Then you can go home and pretend that you are an expert on using these items for cooking, since you went on the europe (Asia/africa/fill in the continent) in 6 days trip in which you learned everything about the people and its culture by talking to your travel guide and hotel receptionist.

4) Those willing to try different foods, but are too xenophobic to go into 'ethnic' food stores.
I think you get a better bargain at a proper ethnic food store rather than at whole foods. The whole foods employ who munches on granola bars all day and did the backpacking trip to India may not be the curry expert after all, but rather just a pothead who claims he does.

5) The health conscious
You would rather leave health and well-being advice to a supermarket rather than a doctor or nutritionist.

6) The not-so rich researcher
You are a post-doc who does not make too much money, who takes the Souther Management Shuttle bus to Whole Foods. Yet, you still wish to throw money out of the window and make stupid decisions although you actually have a proper education. The most you can afford at whole foods is their generic items. You proudly display that bag while walking through the city although all you bought was Whole Foods Ketchup and Organic Cola. In frustration, you make fun of the other people who shop their since you don't have their income, car, health and well-being.

That was it for today!
Reviews on places I have visited

So after living here for about a month I have had some opportunities to visit some cafes/restaurants/bars in my area, and I thought I should share my thoughts, with my usual sarcastic twist that I used to rag on Whole foods market, and at the same time being more diplomatic than a drunken Donald Rumsfeld approaching Iraqi people.

Disclaimer: By no means am I an expert on these places. I have only visited these places once, and am writing a review based on my limited experience. However, I thought giving an opinion that differed from City paper may benefit or even harm the community, so I decided to do that.

1. Chinatown Cafe -323 Park Avenue
Baltimore really lacks an Asian vibe to it unlike places I have lived in California. You don't see rice boys driving around their Acura Integras with stickers from famous mod companies, without having the actual mods themselves. The only Asian food you can get is mall styled chinese food for the tasteless suburbanites or places which think that Asian food should be trendy. Yes, after all Chinese food has only been around for 3000 years so it should be pretty f***ing trendy.

In the shabby part of this city on Park Avenue lies Chinatown Cafe. The tacky interior, no fork on the table, a chinese menu, the slightly unhygienic smell, and the live fish stored in overcrowded conditions that PETA would go ape-shi* over was indeed a clear sign that this restaurant had some food that would be beyond what Panda Express could offer. I ordered the dim sum, which consisted of shrimp dumplings, and steamed pork bun first. The time it took to bring the dim sum was slightly longer than the time George W would need to add and subtract one digit numbers, but it was damn tasty. This was definitely the flavours I used to experience in some dim sum places in San Francisco chinatown (in the non-touristy bits). I also ordered a portion of beef chow fun. The noodles were thick and had enough texture to please the palate while being mild on the flavour. Overall, a great dining experience.

2. XS baltimore- 1307 N. Charles street
A very cool inerior indeed! This place scores a lot of points for the interior. I really like the multi-layer layout of this place. I tend to like buildings where the old cohabitates with something modern and fresh. This was definitely one of those places with the old brick wall still visible, but not in your face with a clean cut interior. I thought that there was a wide selection of bastardized sushi here that most sushi chefs in Japan would take total offense and crap in their pants as if they've eaten an expired crab cake. (sorry, I get passionate over sushi due to my Japanese background. It is one of those items that has been made into a yuppie, ubercool commodity in America rather than sticking to the proper traditional formulas) But having said that, the tuna roll I ordered was reasonably good. The chicken pad thai I had was also fresh with enough spices to give a nice sensation in the mouth. The presentation was top-notch, with sushi being served with an orchid on the plate which was very pleasing to the eye. The pleasant interior combined with the food definitely is worth it!

....so I am quite happy that the Mt. Vernon area has something a bit more unique to offer than restaurants such as "The Olive Garbage" or "El Trashito". (Why is it that in America, apart from ethnic restaurants most restaurants are 'chain restaurants', especially when you go to the suburbs?)

To buy or not to buy, that is the question!

Having just moved over from abroad, I am here without a car. So far so good, such that I can take the free shuttle to work. However, on the weekends when I have to run experiments I will probably have to take the number 10 bus to Bayview from downtown.

I am contemplating over buying a car, but at the same time I know that it's going to be expensive. : ( (sometimes I wonder why I'm not one of those Asian kids whose parents will buy them a nice car)
When I saw some smashed glass on the sidewalk this morning, I realized that I'll probably have to get indoor parking, which costs 125 a month. Then there's insurance, which may be anohter 200 or so? I've been looking for cars on carmax.com, and used cars aren't that cheap either. For something that perform a simple function of going from point A to B, cars really eat up your wallet, like Pac Man eating pills. For the amount of money you spend it doesn't seem like it'll give me the satisfaction. For me a good bottle of wine will give me more satisfaction.

Anyway, can people who live in downtown tell me about their stories about owning a car?

ok, i'm not in the mood to rag on supermarkets today! : ) I think I did enough of that, and by now their lawyers are probably chasing me down.

into my 3rd week or so here, and slowly getting to know some people here. The people at work are cool, but they don't really seem to go out drinking after work. And even when they do, I don't think they hang out in the Mt. Vernon area.

Anyway, I'd be delighted to know if people on this forum go out drinking in the Mt. Vernon area. If so, I would be delighted if I could join!

first impressions from the first week...

hoi,

I've been here for over a week now, and would like to give a report about my first impressions of Bulletmore, sorry Baltimore.

I like the neighbourhood I live in (Mt vernon). It's really cozy and charming, and plenty of places to go to eat, drink, and be merry. From an architectural perspective, I think it's really splendid!

I like walking inside Lexington Market, and absorbing the odours of various types of food.

Then there's my work, at the JHU Bayview campus, which is quite nice. You get a beautiful view of downtown Baltimore.

But it seems like there are so many boarded up homes and abandoned buildings, which i find a real shame because these buildings sure can be used!

anyway....will write more later about my impressions....or better yet i should start a blog... : )

ciao

Cycling, jogging, and Baltimore

ok time for a new question from someone who is getting ready to move...

I like riding my bicycle to work more than I like my espresso in the morning. Ever since I've lived in the San Francisco bay area, I've learned that this mode of transport is environmentally friendly and it allows more social interaction.

I'm just wondering how bicycle friendly the Mt. Vernon area is.

Also, I didn't see much greenery from the satellite images of google maps in that area. Thus, when it comes to jogging will it be pretty much urban jogging? Where are some nice places to go jogging?
